Sprawl
2015
In this body of work, I explore ideas of limitation, crowding, expansion, and destruction through visualizing the simultaneous growth and decay of a city over time. This work evolved along the continuum spanning representational and abstract, guided by my goal of using visual crowding to expose and explore the limitations of working on small, two-dimensional, rectangular surfaces. Through demonstrating how city growth is accompanied by the demarcation and transformation of organic forms to geometric structures and configurations, I consider the idea of limitation not only in regard to medium, but also in regard to physical city spaces. From this position, I aim to suggest that while urban development is often associated with progress, it often presents its own challenges and shortcomings.
